ANYTIME SENIOR GARDEN! #3

LYDIA'S TOTE GARDEN & MILO

I have been doing this "Compost
Tote Gardening" for 4 months.
The tote bins cost me $5-$6 at
most stores. I decided to  make compost bins in 12 and 15-quart dishpans. They only cost  $1-$2
at the discount stores. This
project has been fun!  I used
plastic end tables after I used
up my recycled patio chairs.
They were only  $7 at discount
stores near my house.  I had
some unused metal fern stands.
I  placed totes/dishpans on them
and added them to my tote garden
display.

It's amazing how big my dill,
stevia, basil, and bell pepper plants
got in 6-quart planters.

I got 3-inch bell peppers and
lemon cucumbers.  Dill plants
in my containers died last year.
The compost bin underneath my
dill must have been the key to
a fantastic yield. I harvested
and dried dill two times.

TIPS THAT HELPED MY PLANTS:

+MAKE SEVERAL HOLES IN PLANTERS & BINS.
(GOOD DRAINAGE IS ESSENTIAL)

MAKE COMPOST IN BIN/DISHPAN:

ORDER OF ITEMS USED :

( AVOID COLOR ADS/MAILERS)
+ LAYER OF COFFEE GROUNDS
MIXED CRUSHED EGGSHELLS
+FOOD SCRAPS WHEN AVAILABLE
( NO MEAT)

+ THICK LAYER OF POTTING SOIL ON  TOP OF COMPOST. (THIS DISCOURAGES GARDEN PESTS &  CRITTERS ) ( KEEPS SMELL OF COMPOST DOWN AS IT DECOMPOSES)

DIY LIQUID FERTILIZER:

RECIPE #1

MAKE COMPOST TEA:

STEP 1:

MAKE 2-3 HOLES IN FRONT OF
TOTE/BIN.

STEP #2:

PLACE BUCKETS OR RECYCLED
CONTAINERS UNDER TOTE
GARDEN TO COLLECT WATER
FROM COMPOST. USE THIS
WATER (TEA) ON
PLANTS/HERBS FOR BETTER GROWTH.

PLANT PROTECTION:

USE SHADE CLOTH FOR PLANTS/ HERBS SENSITIVE TO HEAT ON
HOT DAYS.

DARK  COLORED TULLE  FABRIC
MIGHT WORK TOO.

SENIORS CAN REGROW VEGGIES!

I was up late one night looking at
my Boards and Pins on Pinterest.
I noticed  several Pins and
Boards stating that you can
"ReGrow Kitchen Scraps"
I thought, " No Way". I had to
see if this was a scam, all hype,
or a joke!

I started with the green onions.
I bought a bag of green onions
with roots from the grocery store.
I placed some of them in a jar
in my kitchen window. The rest
of the onions were placed in a planter on my porch.

My onions grew two inches by
the end of the week! I have had
never-ending source of green
onions since last year.

I tried rooting pineapple tops and
ginger root. The pineapple top
had to be rooted in water first.
The ginger root can be cut in
pieces. I let the ends of the ginger
harden on the counter.  I  placed
them in the soil in my planters with
the buds pointing up, I had to keep
the ginger root watered for a few months. Finally, green shoots
came up and the plant looked pretty.

I regrew mini bell peppers from my
grocery store. I removed their seeds and placed them in organic soil
in a planter. Celery was so easy
to regrow. I cut the bottom section
off three celery stalks. I placed
the bottoms in water until green
leaves and roots appeared.  I
have nice celery plants on my
front porch and back yard.

CELERY PLANT

Now I have baby bok choy plants
in water. I'll place them in a
planter when I get more roots!

BABY BOK CHOY

I had success with regrowing yellow onions if they had green sprouts on them. I also discovered green sprouts
on some pearl onions at the grocery store. I bought several of them.
I placed all of these sprouted onions
in planters in June.  Some of the planters  have protruding onions peeking out of the dirt.  I need to wait until the yellow skin forms on
these onions.

I have really enjoyed this regrowing grocery store produce project. I have reviewed several online videos on how to regrow grocery store vegetables.
I have saved money. This was a good thing during this COVID-19 Pandemic!

ANYTIME SENIOR GARDENING! #2

LYDIA 'S SENIOR GARDEN & HER POOCH MILO

NOTE:
PLEASE OVERLOOK THE SYSTEM FONT ISSUES!

I have been in an experimental mood this summer. Maybe staying home
due the Pandemic is the cause.
I wanted to try challenging gardening methods. I have been viewing more videos on gardening.

My new interest is storage bin gardening. This is not a new
concept except this person placed
the bin on a patio chair. Compost
was added to the bins. I was initally turned off when I heard the word COMPOST! My son tried it once
and it was a lot of work.  This new method of composting was
a lot easier. The compost was
layered in the bin and no compost turning was involved. The garden plants were placed in small planters then placed on top of the soil in the bins.

I reviewed several videos and devised  the gardening method for me.

*2 large red dish pans
(with holes in bottom)
sitting on 2 recycled patio chairs

*Compost for my dish pans:
Layered in following order:
Dead yard leaves
Shredded paper
Day old coffee grounds mixed
with crushed eggshells
Potting soil

(4) 6 inch planters filled
with garden plants

Now I have graduated to a recycled
bench, patio chairs, and end tables.
They all have compost filled storage bins and dishpans sitting on them.

After three months the roots from
the planters have grown into the compost bin. I have plenty of earthworms that enriched the soil.
I have harvested bell peppers, basil, mint, dill, and stevia from these small planters!

This gardening method is low maintenance and only small space
required!.  I received more herbs
and veggies than I did last year.
I plan on having a fall garden too.

ANYTIME SENIOR GARDENING!

Hey, Senior Lady or Guy, I want to
share some information with you.
I found out that you can have a mini
garden whether you are old or young.
It doesn't even matter whether you are
physically active not.

I figured that now was a good time to learn gardening since I am "staying at home"due to the Pandemic! Walking outside my door  to get some lettuce for a salad  would be a wonderful thing!

Senior Citizens can set up a mini garden outside of the house or
apartment on the patio or balcony.

! discovered from watching online videos that you can make all kinds of raised beds. I saw a child's swimming pool used as a raised bed. This was an ingenious idea but too large for

my limited space.  Most people used lumber for their raised beds. This was too expensive for my budget. These beds required more physical labor than this senior lady could handle. Finally,
I saw a video where the woman used recycled patio chairs and 18 lb plastic totes for their garden. I quickly realized that this would make a great low
maintenance raised bed for Seniors!!

I live in a house but I can't do

heavy lifting. So, I might need
a small bin or tote. I checked
in my back yard and found old
faded plastic patio chairs.
I went shopping for bins, plants
and potting soil. There are dollar
stores and big box stores near me.
I felt blessed because I was able to
find all of the items for my mini
garden for less than $30.  I decided
on dishpans since no totes were
in stock at the store.

I bought these items:

(2) Sterlite 12 quart red dishpans

1-20 lb quality potting soil

1- 19 oz pot of  lettuce

(Required 6-8 hours of sun)

$7
( Available Rose's Discount Store)

$2.00

(Roses Discount Store)

(Lowe's Home Improvement)

$8.00

Lettuce/ 19 oz  Pot ($2/$5.00 SALE)

BEFORE YOU SET UP GARDEN;

Note whether plants require

part shade or full sun.
Place chair and bin/dishpan
best location for correct sunlight
EXPOSURE!

GARDEN SETUP:

Place chair and bin/dishpan
in a permanent location!
(These items heavy to move after
filled with soil-BE CAREFUL!)

Make 3 holes in the bottom

of bin/pan.  Fill the container
with soil and add your plants.
Water your plants.  Follow instructions on plant marker
about sun, watering, and fertilizer requirements.

Tips:

*Check out videos on YouTube

and Pinterest for new gardeners.

* Make holes in bin or dishpan
with hot glue gun.  The point of
sharp kitchen knife works too.

* QUALITY SOIL:

compost, organic mix, plant food,
or moisture control mix included
in soil.

*Watering can is optional.
Recycling 2-liter bottle soda
for watering plants works well.

*I use dollar store garden gloves

but bare hands work too.

*Gardening tools available at

Dollar stores. Recycled
large kitchen tools work fine.

* I save my leftover brewed
coffee  & it for fertilizing
my house and garden plants.
