JUNETEENTH INSPIRATION!

Image
I am thankful that I have reached the ripe old age of seventy ( 70)l! Wisdom  can come with aging if you  pay attention. Being attentive to my  past life occurrences and consequences has made me wiser and  healthier. The main reason this happened was  because of the grace of God!  I embrace the longevity of  Seniors much older than myself. I respect them more than ever.  My mom will be ninety ( 90 ) this year. She still has more energy than I do at times.  She will complete her chores no matter how long it takes. She has arthritis but it doesn't stop her most days. She is still mentally sharp and will chastise any one who thinks she is old and feeble minded. I admire and love  her very much.. I was so amazed by an article I read in AARP online newsletter. A 95 year old woman was instrumental in the making of Juneteenth as a national holiday. Here the link to this feature article: https://www.sistersletter.com/culture/meet-the...

I was so glad today was Friday! I rolled over in bed and cut the TV on. The news channel  I was listening to, had a strange tagline, Shortage of baby formula!.I sat up and  switched to another channel. It said the same thing-Shortage of baby formula!. I thought what would young mothers do! walmart.com ebay.com I suddenly had visions of my Mother doing one of her daily chores She had to mix up baby formula.for my baby brother. There was canned milk, bottled corn syrup, and a pot of boiled water on the table. She added the milk and corn syrup  to the water.  Mom stirred the by aby formula several times until it was well mixed. Sometimes I helped her fill up  the baby bottles.  The bottles of  milk were stacked in the fridge after they cooled off.  I saw this recipe online: DIY Baby Formula 13 oz canned Evaporated  Milk 19 oz Water  2 tablespoons Corn Syrup Wow!  This memory  seemed like ages ag...

SENIOR LADY DOES HERBALS!

Image
fulllhdpictures.com Many years ago, I only thought of herbs  as a cooking enhancement. My Mom loved using sage in  her Thanksgiving  side dishes.  I used rosemary and thyme on my potatoes and chicken after seeing them in recipes. I discovered its  homeopathic uses several years later I do  recall her making me injest  spoonfuls of that ghastly cod liver oil to keep me from getting colds and the flu. She had to catch me and my siblings and hold us down. We hated the taste  of  this stuff.   gurneys.com She also  told me to plant Catnip when my boys were babies. This was good for baby colick.   She supplied the plants which I planted immediately. The side effect was, I found kittens laying in my Catnip bush. Mother cats kept taking up residence, so I removed it. I had dogs and wanted to avoid cat and dog fights. I was in such misery when I was going through menopause. The Inter...

THE VIRUS INVASION!

Image
I love blogging and choosing subjects to blog about can be tricky. I have avoided talking about the VIRUS! However, two years later, I am still dealing with the VIRUS! I had no idea that I would experience in my lifetime, Hurricane Fran in 1996,   North Carolina 24  inch Snowstorm in January 2000,   and earthquake tremors while at work in 2011. Now I can add the VIRUS experience to my life's challenges.  I'm attempting to blog about the VIRUS today. THE GAME CHANGER I'm too old to be trendy; however, I have heard the phrase "game change" in T. V. ads.  I feel like my life has experience a " GAME CHANGER" since the year 2020.  I got phone calls asking me, "Have you heard about a killer virus?" I turned on my favorite 7 pm Prime Time news show to verify this tale!  How about,  I've been glued to TV ever since listening to the numbers of new cases of people with the virus and the numbers of deaths. After 3\2020 my State required...

THE BEST KEPT SECRET #2

Image
istockphoto.com Note: Please excuse the font issues I like the advice my Mom gave me. She.said, "Eat what you want, but do it in moderation."  Now that I am a senior citizen, I have made some changes. I try to eat  homemade low cal muffins and  breads during the week.  I keep bananas, carrots, and zucchini on hand to make muffins or breads with. I make a dessert on the weekends. I have learned to use cake mix as a base and turn into flavorful cookes, muffins, breads, and cakes.  I had to use this method because I have weak grip in my hands. I love baking pound cakes but only do it on special look occasions. I reserve  b acon, sausage, and eggs for Sunday breakfast.  I   do like cooking  meat for dinner, especially poultry. Casseroles and one pot  wonders with meat are my "Go To" meals during the week. I let beef, chicken, turkey, or pork be a part of my meals on Sunday. I avoid deep fried meats, so  I purchased an air fryer. This w...

NEW YEAR'S HAM FIXINGS!

Image
clipground.com I was concerned about this new COVID variant called Omicron. I already had a disturbing phone call last week.  One of my friend's relatives and their family were in quarantine due to Omicron.   My sons and I rung in the  together since we've been vaccinated. We didn't want to plan a gathering and expose ourselves to the risk of expose to COVID viruses.  I prepared Teriyaki chicken drumsticks and mini pizzas for our appetizers.  We knew it was time to do our traditional toasts! Fireworks from downtown were blasting. nearby.  I did my social media "Happy New Year's" greetings too! I got up New Years morning and prepared baked ham, collards, black eye-peas, and corn muffins. The dessert was chocolate swirl cheesecake. Whew! I had to go sit down after all that cooking! I saw left over ham in the fridge this morning. I couldn't eat another slice unless I did a make-over on  this ham.  I had not eaten ham salad in years. ...
